No Gran Turismo 6 for PS4, but Gran Turismo 7 will appear in 1 to 2 years
Developer Polyphony Digital isn’t very reliable when it comes to releasing games on time. They typically take a lot longer to complete than fans, and I’d imagine Sony, would like them to. So when Gran Turismo 6 was announced for PS3 rather than PS4, I speculated that surely there’d be a quick turnaround getting the game updated for a re-release on Sony’s new hardware. That’s clearly not the case, though.
Japanese publication Famitsu recently did an interview with Polyphony Digital CEO and series producer Kazunori Yamauchi where they touched upon Gran Turismo 6, the PS4, and what will inevitably be called Gran Turismo 7.
It turns out GT6 isn’t going to have a quick update and re-release on the new console. Instead it looks as though a new entry in the series is being developed for the PS4. That game will surely be announced eventually as Gran Turismo 7, and I say eventually as Yamauchi says we’ll be waiting at least 12 months for it. But it could be as long as two years away.
Based on past performance, it’s fair to say that GT7 isn’t going to appear on the PS4 until some time in 2015. That poses a bit of a problem for Sony as it’s not like gamers can boot up GT6 on their PS4s due to it not being backwards compatible. Still, the prospect of a new game taking full advantage of the PS4 hardware is sure to excite racing fans and fans of the Gran Turismo series alike, and the waiting is just par for the course.
