New PS Vita caught on video, LCD screen looks great

When Sony announced that it was set to lower the price of the PS Vita to $199, the main response from the gaming community was “finally.” Then they announced a new model, and for the most part it was good news, what with 1GB on board memory, longer battery life, and cheaper memory cards promised. However, Sony did make one worrying change–the 5-inch OLED panel has been replaced with an LCD part.
Then yesterday a comparison image appeared of the original OLED PS Vita next to the new LCD version, and it didn’t look promising. The colors were less vibrant and the edges slightly faded. Has Sony messed up with this move to LCD? Well, no. The image wasn’t truly representative, and I think the video below shows off the new LCD in a much better light.
The colors look great, the viewing angles are great, there’s no fading at the edges of the display, and it’s a very bright screen. I don’t think anyone considering picking up the new PS Vita has much to worry about based on what we are seeing here.
Sony Computer Entertainment president and CEO Andrew House has been asked why Sony decided to make the switch. Price wasn’t mentioned, although the LCD panel is going to be cheaper than the OLED it replaces. House instead pointed to the fact that LCD had caught up with OLED in terms of image quality so it became an option. Also, using the LCD panel is what allowed the PS Vita to get 20 percent thinner, which is surprising as OLED has always been shown off (in TVs at least) as being an ultra thin display.

Manufacturing is also thought to be much easier now. The method for attaching the OLED, touch layer and cover was apparently very difficult and could easily end up breaking the OLED panel. With LCD that isn’t an issue, meaning PS Vita production is probably going to increase and get less expensive for Sony, too.
If you are considering buying a new PS Vita then the video above is the best evidence I’ve seen so far for the display being a great replacement. I don’t think we have anything to worry about.
